Since its premiere by Eugene Ysaye in 1896, Ernest Chausson's Poeme has remained a staple of the violinist's repertoire. It was inspired by a short story by the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, who lived in Paris from 1870. The text depicts a love triangle and a woman spellbound by a violin melody. The Poeme combines a mysterious inspiration drawn from Turgenev's work with brilliant violin writing.
